The Geitjesbos keeps growing 🌳
The Geitjesbos, the little goats' wood…
In December 2021, we at 2CV&CO bought 1.5 ha of woodland (to be reforested) to reduce our footprint. That way, the CO2 our little 2CVs emit is, as it were, absorbed by our own trees. Alongside the existing vegetation, we planted eight hundred young trees in January 2023. Now that these saplings are growing well, we are trying to lay a walking path through the wood. In time we want to open our wood to walkers, so that everyone who loves nature and walking can enjoy it too...
Ponds are cool!
In collaboration with the Bosgroep (forest group), we had a pond dug in our Geitjesbos in September 2025. Ponds are real hotspots for biodiversity.
Did you know that...
- More than 100 species of animals and plants can live in 1 small pond? From tiny water fleas to newts and even water scorpions, it is a complete ecosystem!
- Many Flemish ponds have disappeared over the past decades? That is a disaster for the plants and animals that live in them.
- Many amphibians return every year to the pond where they themselves were born?
- Most amphibians avoid ponds with fish, because fish eat their eggs and larvae?
Grass and herb strip
Also in collaboration with the Bosgroep and our neighbouring farmer, a strip of grasses and wild herbs was sown along the edge of the wood. Here too, the aim is to boost biodiversity. In addition, the wood is better protected against erosion and against drifting fertilisers and pesticides. Replacing tall boundary trees with a shrub border, or maintaining the woodland edge well, in turn means fewer overhanging branches and less shade on the field. A win-win for both parties.
